Rowing. Cycling. Strength.

Upbeat Rowing, Cycling + Strength training classes using heart rate training zones. Every drop of sweat is worth it, because you are.

4 Class Styles to choose from.

Who takes GRIT ROW classes?

Mothers, adventurers, husbands, beach body enthusiasts, cancer warriors, daughters, workout buddies, high school and college athletes, survivors, mental health seekers, grandparents, fitness newbies and perhaps you. Classes offer well trained athletes and beginners the opportunity to workout at their own pace. All fitness levels are welcome.

I’ve heard you keep the lights down really low in classes. Why?

Studies show that dimming the light helps narrow your focus and when you narrow your focus its easier to get into the flow of your workout. Low light also helps create a less intimidating and more welcoming environment because no one is focused on what they look like or what those around them look like. Also….it’s fun (with our black lights neon + white colors make it especially fun).

What’s so great about incorporating rowing into your fitness routine?

Rowing is an amazingly effective low impact + full body workout. Every stroke utilizes 86% of your muscles allowing you to build aerobic endurance, increased range of motion and muscular strength in a way that is easy on your joints.

New to fitness and/or rowing and heart rate zone training?

Everyone has to start somewhere and 95% of those taking GRIT ROW classes had never used a rowing machine before. No worries - this is your class - lets make it work for you. Your first class you need to arrive 15 minutes early to get set up with your heart rate monitor (myzone) and get familiar with the machines so you are ready to roll when class begins. Using myzone technology allows us to see results straight from our hearts.

*Please note HR monitors are optional. If you own or use a studio compatible heart rate monitor your tile will be displayed so you can see your results and pace yourself.

Do you lift weights in GRIT ROW classes?

Yes, but you can always modify. All class types incorporate some type of strength or resistance training. You decide how heavy you want to go and are welcome to NOT use weights (push ups on the wall for example for less weight on shoulders + wrists). Strength work in the studio includes dumbbells, slam balls and TRX.

How will I know how “hard” or how “easy” I’m supposed to be rowing?

Your instructor will guide you through the workout using heart rate zones, perceived exertion and customized power zone cards.

“GRIT ROW is totally effort-based; it’s as hard as you want to make it.”

What to expect

  • The studio is kept dark! Like….really dark. There are also black lights in there so feel free to let your (neon) fashion flag shine if you wish.

Our studio bikes (Spinner Chrono model) are compatible with road bike SPD cleats. The bikes have cages as well so you can also wear regular workout shoes.

Please bring water to class, you’ll be happy you did.

Need childcare during your class time? Grit Rowers are welcome to use the childcare at The Dalles Athletic Club. You will need to call 541-298-8508 24hrs in advance to reserve your spot and pay ($4.25 per hour per child) at the front desk when you drop your child(ren) off.

Exercise mats are mandatory. Your mat goes on top of the 6x4 Grit Row mat for your safety (I clean mats between classes and they can be slightly wet yuck! and slippery). Feel free to leave your mat in a cubby at the studio. If you forget yours they are available for rent ($2).

If you sweat a lot consider wearing a fitness headband or hat and leggings/tights with no seam on the butt….because (a-hem) chafing sucks.

Wear comfortable, slim fitting athletic gear and comfortable workout shoes. Flat soled shoes such as converse, weight lifting and barefoot are ideal but running shoes and even crocs are fine too!

All high-touch surfaces, weights and rowers are thoroughly cleaned between classes.
